According to the publication, Apple is making significant investments in satellite communications, whereas SpaceX has launched over 550 satellites that enable mobile communications via the Starlink network. The firms fight for spectrum licenses, a restricted quantity of radio frequencies for signal transmission.

The publication's sources note that Apple's investment in space "provoked Musk's anger." SpaceX has requested that federal regulators halt Apple-backed initiatives to grow its satellite network.

The tension escalated in recent months after SpaceX and its ally T-Mobile contacted Apple regarding the inclusion of the Starlink satellite network on the iPhone, sources told WSJ. After intense negotiations, the firms came to an arrangement whereby SpaceX and T-Mobile's satellite mobile service will be featured on upcoming iPhones.
