Vero: An Instagram killer?

03/01/2018

The Vero application was launched in 2015 and did not appear in the first 1.5 thousand applications of the App Store шт last week, but today it is the most popular social network in the US store. Servers are overloaded so much that many users cannot post posts or subscribe to other accounts. Why did this application suddenly become so popular?

Vero is a free social network of the Lebanese billionaire Ayman Hariri, the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. A businessman with a fortune of $ 1.33 billion said he launched the application because he was disappointed with the privacy policy of advertising social networks. In many respects similar to Instargam, Vero has several differences: in addition to the ability to publish your photos, users can share text and links, as well as recommendations for books, TV shows and movies. Also, the application sorts the newsfeed in reverse chronological order. This runs counter to the new "smart" Instagram newsfeed, which shows records based on their popularity and user activity. The company claims that it collects a minimum amount of information about a new user and does not provide data to advertisers or third parties.

The application has not generated any revenue so far. Representatives of the company say that eventually it will rely on subscriber subscriptions. CNBC claims that the fee will be "several dollars a year". Currently, the company refuses to subscribe for the first million users.

Vero was launched in 2015, and its best result was then the 45th place in the category of social networking in the App Store, but the application quickly lost popularity and went beyond 1,5 thousand of the most popular store applications. At the end of last week, the app suddenly rose in the ratings and from the 566th place came out on the first in four days. According to the forecasts of the analytical company Sensor Tower, it will soon overcome the bar in 600 thousand lifetime downloads in the App Store and Google Play and will start to add more than 500 thousand users a day. The popularity of the application is associated with disappointment in the algorithm of the Instagram newsletter, which forces users to search for other applications with a chronological tape. Currently, more than 500 thousand messages in Instagram are tagged with #Vero hashtag.

Will Vero keep its popularity? It's not clear yet. Previous attempts to create the "killer" of Instagram ended in failure, even despite short-term success. Examples include the Ello, Peach, and Sarahah applications.
