Von der Leyen received 401 votes in favor during a secret ballot, 284 votes against, and 15 abstentions. There were seven blank votes.

Out of the 720 members of the parliament, 361 votes or more were needed to elect the head of the EC.

Following von der Leyen's keynote address, which was debated by deputies and leaders of political factions, the vote was held.

Von der Leyen has served as the current mandate's head of the European Commission since 2019. She was the leader of the center-right European People's Party list that garnered the most votes in the June 6–9 European Parliament elections.

The European Council, which convened in Brussels on June 27 and 28, suggested von der Leyen for a reelection to the presidency of the European Commission.

The European Council must formally approve the candidacy of the head of the European Commission after it has been approved by the European Parliament.
