The attorney general of Missouri filed the lawsuit in April 2020, soon after the pandemic started, alleging that Chinese officials concealed information regarding the virus's existence and transmission, and also blocked shipments of personal protective equipment (PPE) to other nations.
On March 7, Federal Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. ruled that "China deceived the global community regarding the threats and extent of the COVID-19 pandemic" and "participated in monopolistic behaviors to accumulate PPE." The judge stated that this hindered the swift response to the pandemic in the U.S. and prevented the acquisition of adequate PPE for healthcare professionals.
Missouri's Acting Attorney General Andrew Bailey stated that Chinese officials had chosen not to show up in court, but that did not relieve them of their responsibilities.
