In the summer of 2021, Oregon experienced the "heat dome" climatic phenomena, in which a small region of hot air takes the form of an inverted bowl in the atmosphere. The report states that during that time, there were 69 heat-related fatalities in Multnomah County, which includes the state's largest city, Portland. Heat-related fatalities are uncommon in a regular year.
According to the lawsuit, petroleum companies "deceptively advertise fossil fuel products as environmentally friendly," which leads to dangerous occurrences like the "heat dome."
The county is requesting $1.5 billion in future damages in addition to $50 million in actual damages for the 2021 "heat dome". County authorities want to use the $50 billion settlement from the lawsuit, which makes up the majority of the case, to better prepare for climate change through research, public infrastructure improvements, and health care.
The lawsuit names Shell, Chevron, BP, and ExxonMobil as defendants in addition to other major oil and gas companies.
