António Guterres emphasized that the emergence of generative artificial intelligence "amazed and shocked" him.

By 2030, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) could have made up to $15 trillion in contributions to the world economy, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres at a meeting of the organization’s Security Council on artificial intelligence on Tuesday.

Guterres emphasized that the emergence of generative AI had "amazed and shocked" him. The UN secretary-general said that the number of ChatGPT users "has reached 100 million in just two months," stressing that "the speed and reach of this new technology in all its forms is absolutely unprecedented." The financial industry expect that artificial intelligence (AI) will contribute between $10 trillion and $15 trillion to the global economy by 2030, added Guterres.

"Virtually all governments, large companies, and organizations in the world are working on an AI [development] strategy," Guterres said, but "even the developers themselves have no idea where their outstanding technological achievements could lead."
