"Right now, over 4.5 million tons of grain are at Ukrainian ports and aboard ships, and they can't be used as intended," he told the dpa news agency. "The world desperately needs the food," he added.
"Hunger cannot be used as a weapon, neither militarily nor economically," he added, calling for the resumption of food supplies from Ukraine to other countries in order to "address the world food crisis."
Because Ukraine and Russia are the top grain exporters, European officials have frequently warned of a global food disaster as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported a 12.6 percent increase in the food price index in March, bringing it to 159.3 points, the highest level since 1990. Prices for vegetable oils (up 23.2 percent in March compared to February) and cereals were among the main drivers of this increase (by 17.1 percent).
