The Sun: The UK sends the first deported migrant to Rwanda

05/01/2024

The first migrant to be denied asylum has been expelled by the UK government and sent to Rwanda, according to sources cited by The Sun. The article said that the refugee had fled the nation of his own free will. The government gave him 3,000 pounds sterling to cover his relocating costs.

He had been denied refuge by the end of 2023, and took a commercial flight on April 29 to Rwanda's capital, Kigali. The publication's sources characterized his relocation process as "successful evidence" of an attempt to deport him forcibly.

The UK Parliament approved a bill on migrant expulsion to Rwanda on April 23. The main goal of the project is to deport everyone who entered the United Kingdom illegally to Rwanda. There, illegal immigrants are expected to wait a resolution of their asylum claims in the United Kingdom.

The British Supreme Court declared in November 2023 that the program was unlawful, citing Rwanda's perceived safety as a dangerous place for asylum seekers. The initial flights to Rwanda, according to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, won't depart until July.
