Tesla is exploring constructing a battery-grade lithium hydroxide factory in Texas, the first of its type in North America. Batteries for electric vehicles are made using lithium hydroxide, reports CNBC.

The Office of the Texas Comptroller of the Currency received a request from Tesla to construct the plant. Tesla aims to process unenriched ore, and the resulting lithium hydroxide will be sent to facilities that make batteries for Tesla automobiles, as stated in the application.

At the Texas facility, the business also plans to process "additional battery materials" and carry out "other manufacturing operations to support the sustainable production process at Tesla plants."

According to the application, such a plant might be situated along the Texas coast to make it easier to ship goods by sea. The company further emphasized that Tesla will only be able to build this production plant at a reasonable cost if Tesla is given tax advantages under state law. In the event that the proposal is accepted, Tesla is ready to start building in the fourth quarter of this year and to start producing by the end of 2024.
