Tesla’s Model S Returns To BAFA’s Incentive Scheme List

03/29/2018

Buyers “may be asked to repay subsidies they have already received” for Tesla Model S.

With the end of the dispute between Tesla and a “government agency”, the buyers of the former could now once again “apply for subsidies”. The dispute involved the Model S of Tesla which was disputed for being “too expensive” for qualifying for “the incentives scheme”.

According to an assessment carried out independently revealed that “a base version of the Model S was available for less than the 60,000 euros”, whereby proving the cars to be “eligible”, informed the “German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Controls”.

In the year of 2016, Germany has started the “incentive scheme” which valued at around “1 billion euros”, while the “German car industry” partly financed the same for boosting the EV usage, although the scheme has included a “baseline” for exempting “premium models”.

In an unexpected move, BAFA had removed “Tesla’s vehicles” from the list in the month of December 2018, as it claimed that customers will not be able place an order for the “Model S base version without extra features” and these added cost would push the entire acquisition cost over the “price limit”.

At that time, Tesla had refused that any “no-frills version” of the model was “not available”. However, On Thursday, 29 March 2018, the company stated that one such model was “always available below the cut-off price”.

On the other hand, BAFA was still reviewing applications that received previous approval for the subsidies, whereby indicating that buyers “may be asked to repay subsidies they have already received”.

According to Reuters:
“BAFA has received a total of 1,275 applications for subsidies of Tesla purchases, according to its website. It was not immediately clear how many of those were approved before the agency removed Tesla from its list in December”.
