This transaction, as well as an increase in car sales, contributed to the company's quarterly profit rising 27-fold (year-on-year) to a record $438 million.

Elon Musk himself later said on Twitter, commenting on the bitcoin sale, that the company only sold 10% of its bitcoins in order to test their liquidity as an alternative to storing funds in fiat currencies. And Tesla CFO Zack Kirkhorn spoke about the company's intention to keep current assets in cryptocurrency and accumulate those bitcoins that customers pay for cars with.

Earlier it was reported that it will be possible to pay for the company's products with bitcoins from March 24. However, so far such an option is only available in the United States.

After Tesla published its financial statements, Bitcoin surged in value.
