Over 600 luminaries attended the event, including Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

The Greek Reporter writes that actresses dressed as ancient priestesses participated in the fire lighting ceremony. The Olympic torch relay between Greece and France began with the torch being ignited by Greek actress Mary Mina, who was dressed as a high priestess. The relay on Greek soil began when she handed the torch to Greek Olympic champion Stefanos Douskos. The relay will run for 11 days, ending on April 26.

The flame will be transferred to Paris, the host city of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The torch relay competitions will be open to the public for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in 2019.

Paris will host the Summer Olympics from July 26 to August 11.
