Sony invests billions in smartphones production

Sony Group Corp. may spend approximately 800 billion yen ($5.83 billion) to construct a new factory in Japan's western Kumamoto Prefecture to make image sensors for smartphones, Nikkei reports.

According to the article, the corporation intends to begin construction of the factory as early as 2024 and start production no later than 2025.

In addition, the Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate will carefully analyze the construction schedule and size of investments, given fears of a global economic slowdown.

Sony plans to buy image sensor logic chips from TSMC, which is now also building a plant in Kumamoto, Nikkei notes.
