Oil Company Shell has sued the organization Greenpeace, whose activists have already been for more than 40 hours on the platform Polar Pioneer in the Pacific Ocean following to the drilling site in Alaska, said the environmental organization.
- Lawyers for the company appealed to the Federal Court of the State of Alaska with a request to remove activists from the rig Polar Pioneer. At an altitude of 100 meters, six climbers from the US, Germany, Australia, Austria, Sweden and New Zealand have established a tent, they were able to stay on the platform for more than 40 hours – was said in a statement.
Climbers get food, drink and necessary things from the ship Greenpeace "Esperanza", located nearby.
- Shell wants activists stayed away from their platform - Greenpeace wants Shell to stay away from Arctic. USA Greenpeace has the right to peaceful protest against Shell attempts to destroy the Arctic. We intend to continue to observe the actions of Shell, - said the executive director USA Greenpeace Annie Leonard.
As previously reported by Greenpeace Russia, Shell oil company drilling in the Chukchi Sea threatens Russian reservation ‘Wrangel Island’. Under the worst-case scenario of an oil spill released by Shell, within ten days after the accident, oil spill will cross the Russian border. After 30 days, it can reach the buffer zone of the reserve and go on off the coast of the island. In this regard, environmental organizations sent a message about this threat in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
Earlier, activists demanded to ban the activities of oil and gas company in Alaska.
- Irresponsibility of Shell has caused outrage around the world. The company itself admits that the likelihood of a major accident when drilling in the Arctic reaches 75% and it is impossible to eliminate the oil spill out the ice. The president Barack Obama has the power to prevent a major disaster. Arctic should remain a Wildlife Territory, - said the representative of Greenpeace.
According to environmentalists, oil production could have been a disaster not only for the nature of Alaska, but for the entire planet. It should also be noted that previous attempts to extract oil companies on the Arctic shelf ended by incident on platforms, as well as litigation by perturbed Alaska citizens.
- In terms of the oil spill liquidation Shell published the results of simulation of the spill in the Chukchi Sea, which can spread almost 400 kilometers in the direction of Russia. Those documents do not contain any information on transboundary pollution, and does not provide any measures to combat it - explains the project coordinator of Greenpeace Arctic Evgeny Belyakov.
Reserve "Wrangel Island", which is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, until recently, was untouched wilderness boundary. It is known worldwide as a maternity hospital of polar bear habitat and by one of the largest populations of Atlantic walrus. Just in drilling season, summer and fall, the islands of the reserve are going for fattening of hundreds of polar bears.
