One of the events took place in late January near the Turkish port of Ceyhan. The Seacharm tanker, which is owned by Thenamaris, sustained damage. In February, an explosion occurred off the coast of Libya, damaging the Grace Ferrum tanker, which was registered under the Liberian flag and transporting chemical products.

Agency sources indicate that the Grace Ferrum tanker needs a salvage operation. These instances mark the first incidents involving non-military ships in the central Mediterranean in many years.

Earlier, Italian news outlets reported two blasts on the tanker Seajewel at the port of Savona, Italy. A crack indicating external force was discovered on the ship's hull. The team aboard the Malta-flagged tanker reported about the incident on the night of February 15 while they were unloading oil.
