Reuters: China is possibly constructing a major research center

01/29/2025

According to a report by Reuters, experts from CNA Corp and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) indicate that China is probably constructing a significant laser fusion research facility in Mianyang, a city in the southwest of the country. As the agency points out, it may assist in the creation of nuclear arms and the investigation of energy production. Previous reports had not covered the work on the project.

According to CNA Corp researcher Decker Eveleth, satellite images of the planned research center reveal four departments that will contain laser bays along with a central experimental bay. He stated that there would be a chamber containing hydrogen isotopes, which would employ high-powered lasers for their fusion.

Eveleth, collaborating with CNS analysts, assessed that the Chinese center's experimental compartment is approximately 50 percent bigger than the comparably designed U.S. National Laser Fusion Reaction Facility located in Northern California. According to Reuters, NIF has become the largest facility of its kind in the world.

Henry L. Stimson, a nuclear policy expert at the Henry L. Stimson Center, informed Reuters that "any nation owning such a facility can and probably will enhance its confidence in current weapon designs and aid in the advancement of future bomb designs without requiring tests."
