The rate of price rises in Japan in 2023 will be greater than that in 2022 and will be at an all-time high, as shown in a report released by Teikoku Databank, the nation's top statistical agency.
More than 30,000 products had already seen price increases midway through July. At the same time, this number might reach 35,000 by the end of the year, with staple goods like food and drinks affected as well. The study encompassed 195 Japanese businesses.
"The annual price increase of over than 30,000 items is exceptional in the roughly 30 years since the collapse of the bubble economy at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s," the study's authors noted.
"The forecast for electricity prices, which have so far risen, is unclear, and possible variables like growing labor expenses and greater import prices because of the yen's depreciation cannot be addressed." Teikoku Databank added that purchasing power is decreasing as a result of the growing burden on households.
