The newspaper reports that the Financial Offenses Department was given charge of the inquiry. The source of the investigation was a 2023 report by the National Commission on Campaign Accounts and Political Finance.

According to the prosecutor's office, the inquiry was started on July 2 under the following articles: "use of forged documents," "fraud committed to the detriment of a public person," "embezzlement of property by persons performing public functions," and others.

Le Pen performed poorly in the April 2022 presidential contest, falling short against Emmanuel Macron, the current president.

Although Le Pen was the sole target of the inquiry, BFMTV pointed out that the report raised concerns about the conduct of other presidential contenders in the 2022 contest.
