In 2024, the number of billionaires in the world increased by 204 people, to 2769. The total wealth of billionaires for the year increased by $2 trillion, states an annual report by Oxfam, an association of charitable organizations dedicated to solving the problems of poverty.

Oxfam estimates that in 2024, on average, four new billionaires appeared every two weeks in the world, and the total fortune of all billionaires grew by an average of $5.7 billion per day. Oxfam calculated that if these rates continue, five owners of fortunes exceeding $ 1 trillion will appear in the world in the next ten years.

The authors of the report emphasize that 60% of fortunes are not the result of real labor. Their owners receive money by inheritance or through connections and monopoly power. For the first time during the research, the list contains more billionaires-heritors than those who earned their fortune. Moreover, absolutely all billionaires under the age of 30 became such thanks to inheritance.

The report said the number of people living on less than $6.85 a day worldwide “has remained virtually unchanged since 1990.” The report is timed to coincide with the start of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
