Funding of the silicon carbide semiconductors production could reach up to 44 billion Czech crowns ($2 billion). Demand for these chips, which are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional chips, is beginning to rise in sectors including data centers and electric cars.
In addition to growing silicon crystals, Onsemi produces more than 3 million silicon and silicon carbide wafers annually in the Czech Republic.
According to the news release, the company will have contributed more than $270 million to the GDP of the Czech Republic once the new facility is finished.
