Nvidia will limit the ability to mine Ethereum cryptocurrency on upgraded versions of its GeForce RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti graphics accelerators, reads a statement on the company's website.
The new graphics cards of these models will be distinguished by the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) marking in the name. It means that the GPUs are equipped with a mining limiter that reduces the efficiency of Ethereum cryptocurrency mining, Nvidia explained.
Such graphics cards will go on sale at the end of this month. The company does not plan to undercut the mining efficiency of previously released graphics accelerators.
Such a decision is necessary so that Nvidia graphics cards can "get into the hands of gamers" and not just miners of digital currencies, the manufacturer said in a statement.
As noted by The Verge, many gamers have been trying to get their hands on the latest graphics cards for months, but not all can do so because of the global shortage of GPUs, caused, among other things, by the actions of crypto-enthusiasts.
Nvidia, however, is not ignoring this audience either. The company previously introduced special processors for Ethereum mining, which allow mining tokens with maximum energy efficiency, but do not support video acceleration technology, i.e. are useless for gamers.
