The count of bankruptcies among firms and individuals in the Federal Republic of Germany for 2024 grew by nearly 17% compared to the previous year, and on a quarterly basis, it matched the figures seen at the conclusion of the 2008 global financial crisis for the first time in 15 years, based on information from the Institute for Economic Research in Halle (IWH) and a report from the national statistical office (Destatis).

“The total bankruptcies in the last quarter of 2024 reached the peak since the conclusion of the major economic and financial crisis in mid-2009. The previous fourth quarter with elevated rates occurred even earlier, in 2005,” stated the IWH institute in a report.

Based on its data, in the fourth quarter of the previous year, bankruptcies rose by 36% compared to the same quarter in 2023. It is reported that 4,215 businesses and individuals declared bankruptcy, affecting approximately 38 thousand jobs across nearly all areas of the economy.

As per initial figures from Destatis, shared in a recent update on the agency's website, bankruptcies rose by 16.8% year-on-year for the entirety of 2024, and the count of bankruptcies in December last year increased by 13.8% compared to December 2023.
