Nestle to Demolish Maggi Stockpiles

The Swiss company Nestle announced its intention to desmolish stockpiles of Maggi instant noodles worth more than $ 50 million after the Indian regulator has imposed a ban on production because of high lead content. It is reported by BBC News.

Department of Food Safety (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FSSAI) accused Nestle of violating the rules of food safety. Audits conducted in several states show that the lead content exceeds permissible limits noodles. The government of one of the northern states of the country have applied for the Swiss company to court.

Nestle insists that products are safe, and intends to seek the abolition of the ban. CEO Paul Bulcke appealed to the Indian authorities with a request to show the results of laboratory tests and promised to return Maggi to store shelves soon. At the time, Nestle said they would have to spend extra money on a review of the goods from shops, transport and disposal.

Instant noodles are sold in India since 1983. Today Nestle occupies about 80 percent of the market in the country.
