Speaking about the territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana during the Mercosur Summit of States, he stated: "We oppose war in the Americas. We are following the developments related to the Esequiba issue with growing concern."

In addition, he gave the union's heads of state a draft declaration regarding the circumstances surrounding Venezuela and Guyana. As part of the proposal, Brazil suggests restating "the region's status as a zone of peace and cooperation."

"We must establish peace because that is the only way that our nations can advance. We do not want this issue to threaten peace and stability or to impede the restart of the regional integration process," he continued.

Globo News reports that Brazil has stepped up its military presence along the border with these two bordering states in light of the current circumstances.
