Rules approved by the U.S. Democratic Party National Committee will enable Vice President Kamala Harris to formally announce her candidacy for Democratic presidential nominee by August 7. This deadline falls before of the party convention, which is set to take place in Chicago from August 19–22.

The committee's report states that as per the established rules of procedure, candidates for the presidency must officially announce their intentions by the end of July 28 and obtain signatures from a minimum of 300 convention delegates by the end of July 30.

Electronic ballots that are issued to delegates at the Democratic Party convention will be used for voting between August 1 and August 7.

Harris is the lone opponent to date. If additional nominations are received by July 28th, the timetable may be slightly adjusted. Other nominations, though, are improbable.

As a result, the Democratic Party convention vote may end up being only ceremonial.
