JetBlue Airways’ Aims To Achieve Carbon Neutrality In 2020

JetBlue plans to use alternative sustainable fuel for flights taking off from San Francisco and become carbon neutral for the domestic flights.

In an attempt to answer the growing pressure to reduce greenhouse emission, JetBlue Airways Corp has informed that it has plans of turning carbon neutral for all its “domestic flights by July 2020” besides it will be using “an alternative fuel source” for the flights that take off from San Francisco.

The aviation industry is trying to deal with climate change as it attempts to reduce 50% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in comparison to 2005 figures while it is thought that “lower-carbon biofuels” will play a vital role in achieving the above mentioned goal. The industry has a multi facet approach to tackle the issue which includes “alternative fuel, improved operations such as direct flight paths, new planes and other technologies”.

However, as for JetBlue, attempts to cut down on its carbon emission by turning towards renewable energy sources, while using “sustainable aviation fuel in mid-2020 on flights from San Francisco International Airport”.  In the words of the company’s chief executive, Robin Hayes:
“By offsetting all of our domestic flying, we’re preparing our business for the lower-carbon economy that aviation – and all sectors – must plan for”.

Nevertheless, no cost details were provided by the company for this exercise while it is also not known if any other airport will also be part of this plan of reducing greenhouse gas emission. While Reuters reported that as per the IATA, “International Air Transport Association”:
“Sustainable-fuel, derived from sustainable oil crops or from wood and waste biomass, would have the single largest impact in reducing emissions from each flight by around 80%, but is in short supply”.
