Investigators Are Unsure Of The Trump Gunman's Motivation, But The Secret Service Stands By Its Reaction
Two days after the suspect, a 20-year-old shooter, was shot and killed, the FBI was unable to determine what ideology motivated the guy to attack the former president, therefore the reason behind the incident remained a mystery.

The former president was injured in a gunshot at a Pennsylvania campaign event, which overshadowed his rematch with President Joe Biden on November 5. The FBI is now leading the investigation into this incident.

Protecting presidents and previous presidents, the Secret Service went on the attack on Monday in response to allegations that it failed to identify the shooter who shot and killed a spectator and injured Trump in the right ear.

"Secret Service personnel on the ground moved quickly during the incident, with our counter sniper team neutralizing the shooter and our agents implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of former president Donald Trump," Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service director, said in a statement.

Biden directed an independent investigation into how, in spite of the tight protection given by the Secret Service at the event on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, the gunman—who was shot dead by agents shortly after he opened fire—could have gone so near to killing or seriously injuring Trump.

Early information on the inquiry into the gunman, a nursing care assistant named Thomas Matthew Crooks, was hazy.

He was a young man living close to Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, his hometown, and working an entry-level job. In 2022, he completed his high school education and gained recognition as a quiet yet intelligent student. His guidance counsellor called Crooks "respectful" and claimed not to have known him to be politically connected.

On Sunday, the FBI announced that they had not discovered any history of mental health problems or any threatening language on his social media page. They said that Crooks acted alone and that they were still looking for a reason.

Among the numerous well-known gunmen who have recently opened fire at parades, malls, schools, and churches, Crooks stands out because he narrowly avoided killing a U.S. presidential candidate—an occurrence not seen in decades.

Late on Sunday, Trump, who was in Milwaukee making last-minute arrangements to accept his party's official nomination at the Republican National Convention this week, gave off a rebellious and contemplative vibe.

As he came down the steps of his jet, Trump pumped his fist multiple times and seemed to mumble the words "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

He described the realisation that he was so near to death in an interview conducted on the journey.

According to a comment from Trump, "That reality is just setting in," the Washington Examiner said. I hardly ever take my eyes off the throng. We wouldn't be speaking today if I hadn't taken that action at that very moment.

The New York Post quoted Trump as stating, "I want to try to unite our country," during the trip. However, I'm not sure if that's feasible. There is a great division among people."

In Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon, Crooks managed to get onto a rooftop 150 yards (140 metres) away from the platform where Trump was speaking. Officials added that kid then started shooting a semiautomatic weapon in the form of an AR-15 that his father had bought.

A fifty-year-old man was shot and killed, two more bystanders were gravely injured, and Trump's ear was hit by bullets.

The suspect's car was reportedly found to have "a suspicious device" in it; bomb professionals examined it and made it safe.

Crooks, a registered Republican who lived in Bethel Park, roughly an hour distant from the shooting scene, would have been able to cast his first presidential ballot in the election scheduled for November 5.

According to public records, Crooks' mother is a registered Democrat and his father is a registered Republican. Crooks also donated $15 to a Democratic Party charity when he was seventeen years old.

According to a statement released by the nursing facility, Crooks worked there as a dietary assistant at the time of the incident.

"Thomas Matthew Crooks performed his job without concern and his background check was clean," stated Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre administrator Marcie Grimm. "We are shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement."

Crooks graduated from the local high school two years ago, and a classmate who wished to remain anonymous said that he had no special interest in politics. According to the classmate who spoke in an interview, Crooks' hobbies were mostly computer building and gaming.

"He has exceptional intelligence. The classmate claimed, "This was, like, a really, really smart kid, like he excelled. That's what really kind of threw me off." "Nothing crazy ever came up in any conversation."

Jim Knapp, who left his position as Bethel Park High School's school counsellor in 2022, claimed Crooks was "quiet as a church mouse," "respectful," and a recluse, but he did have a few acquaintances.

Because "he wasn't a needy type kid," Knapp claimed that he didn't often encounter Crooks. According to Knapp, who would approach such students to find out if they needed company, Crooks was happy to occasionally eat lunch alone himself in the school cafeteria.

"Kids weren't calling him names, kids weren't bullying him," Knapp stated.

Even while other children occasionally wore Trump or Biden shirts, Knapp claimed he was never aware of Crooks' political affiliation in any way. He continued by saying he did not remember Crooks ever receiving a warning at school.

The news that someone from the quiet, 33,000-person community had been connected to an attempted murder startled and unnerved the neighbours of the Crooks.

The Crooks' home is located on the same street as Wes Morgan, 42, who works at an investment management business. "Bethel Park is a pretty blue-collar type of area, and to think that somebody was that close is a little insane," Morgan said.
