The volcano, which is situated north of the settlement of Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula, started erupting on January 14. The infrastructure of the city is already affected by lava. Grindavik's citizens have been forced to leave their home. Late December 2023 saw Reykjanes' most recent volcanic outburst. The people of the city were evacuated on January 14.
All flights into and out of the nation are running normally, just like in previous eruptions.
According to a geophysicist with the Meteorological Office, "it is impossible to say what kind of destruction Grindavik will face as it depends on the duration of the eruption".
Currently, there are two open faults north of the city; one runs inside the barrier and the second crosses the defensive rampart that is being built.
