Germany to start reducing its 16.49% stake in Commerzbank

Germany intends to begin decreasing its ownership in Commerzbank AG, which was obtained during the financial crisis of 2008-2009, reports The German Financial Agency (Deutsche Finanzagentur).

The government has a 16.49% stake in Commerzbank. According to estimates by FactSet, this stake is valued at around 2.56 billion euros.

During the crisis, Commerzbank received €18.2 billion in aid from the German authorities to help maintain its financial stability. According to Deutsche Finanzagentur, the bank has been making a profit since 2021, leading the government to move forward with selling its shares.

Commerzbank has seen a 19.6 percent increase in capitalization in 2024, with it now standing at 15.51 billion euros. On Wednesday, there was a 1.7% decrease in the price of the bank's securities.
