According to a newspaper report, a call for fresh talks and negotiations on a free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States has been issued by Germany's finance minister. This call is being viewed as an effort to restart talks over the trade deal that was interrupted by a policy change by the former US President Donald Trump.
Instead of pursuing the so-called Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), Trump was more focused on engaging in a variety of trade battles with the European Union which lasted throughout his presidency.
"We should resume negotiations on a transatlantic free trade agreement. Especially now in the (Ukraine) crisis, it is becoming clear how important free trade is with partners around the world who share our values," Christian Lindner, the finance minister of Europe's largest economy, told Handelsblatt.
"Especially now in the [Ukraine] crisis, it is becoming clear how important free trade is with partners around the world who share our values," Lindner said.
It is however unclear about the extent of support for such talks about the trade agreement is present currently across Europe. According to reports, some officials have advocated for a resumption of the talks in recent years, while others have been more cautious and dissuaded from committing to any such talks at the present moment. .
No further comments on his call were available from Germany's finance minister.
The US embassy in Berlin also did not explicitly issue any response to the call made by Lindner, and as reported in the media, in a statement. The embassy however noted that an existing US-EU Trade and Technology Council guaranteed that trade and technology policies being followed by the two trading partners were enough to encourage broad-based growth.
"The current crisis shows the United States and Germany, and the European Union, are indispensable partners," it added.
