The illegal DarkMarket trading platform had nearly 500,000 users and more than 2,400 sellers. At least 320,000 transactions went through the platform, with payments made in cryptocurrency. The turnover was about €140 million. Among other things, drugs, counterfeit money, stolen or counterfeit credit cards, anonymous SIM cards and malware were sold on the platform.
Over the weekend, the Central Criminal Police Inspectorate of Oldenburg detained a 34-year-old Australian man near the German-Danish border. He is allegedly the head of the illegal site. The man is currently in pre-trial detention and refuses to give evidence.
German investigators worked with the support of colleagues from the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the US Tax Administration, as well as police from Australia, Britain, Denmark, Switzerland, Ukraine and Moldova. Europol coordinated the operation.
Investigators seized more than 20 servers in Moldova and Ukraine. Law enforcers hope to obtain details of the organisers, sellers and buyers in this way.
