A study by the US research group Global Energy Monitor (GEM) states that 339 GW of solar and wind generating capacity are presently being built in China (182 GW for solar, and 159 GW for wind).

This is about twice as much as the total amount of all other nations combined. In contrast, the United States, with 40 GW of total capacity under construction, is the closest to China. Third position goes to Brazil with 12.9 GW. Spain (9.5 GW) and the UK (9.7 GW) are also in the top 5.

At that, only solar power facilities and wind power facilities with a minimum capacity of 20 MW and 10 MW, respectively, were considered by the researchers in their evaluation. The data provided pertains to China and European countries as of June 2023, while the remaining countries' data is based on December 2023.

The report's authors point out that, compared to the global average of 7%, one-third of stated projects are currently being built in China.
