In light of the turmoil in Ukraine and the urgent environmental situation, France will become the first major nation to abandon fossil fuels, Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne announced on Wednesday.
"We'll be the first major environmental nation to abandon fossil fuels. This ensures our energy independence," Borne said in her remarks to the French National Assembly.
At the start of June, the price of fuel in the nation surpassed a previous high. In May, France's inflation rate rose to a record-high 5.2 percent. The National Institute of Statistics (Insee) projects that prices for goods and services in France will rise in June.
