According to the Wall Street Journal, four major pharmaceutical companies have come to terms with the two counties in Ohio to escape litigation on charges of fueling an opioid crisis. The fifth accused company, the Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), still waits to reach an agreement.

Cleveland Federal Judge rejected claims against Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Cardinal Health Inc., McKesson Corp.,  Amerisource Bergen Corp. They agreed to fork out over $ 250 mln in order to settle claims pending during their first opioid crisis trial, Bloomberg reports. It is not clear if litigation will continue with respect to the WBA.

The cases in Ohio are likely to set a precedent for a further trial of the opioid crisis, since almost every US state and many smaller governments are trying to obtain compensation from pharma companies related to the production, distribution and marketing of opioids.

According to a report since 1999, over 400 thousand US citizens died from an overdose of opioids.
