“We are opening with 40% of employees at each of the enterprises. This is an orderly and safe launch according to the protocols of the Ministry of Health,” the publication said with reference to the FCA press service.

Work at the enterprises will begin in one of three work shifts; the company does not have information on the timing of the return to full capacity. The FCA group consists of seven plants in Mexico, including three assembly plants, two motor and two stamping plants located in the states of Coahuila and Mexico City, with a staff of 14 thousand people.

German BMW also announced the gradual resumption of work at the plant in San Luis Potosi in central Mexico from Wednesday, following employee health protocols. The company employs 2,500 people.

Earlier, another German automaker, Volkswagen, said that the resumption of work at an enterprise in Puebla was hindered by a local government decree that explicitly prohibited it, despite meeting new sanitary safety requirements.

The Mexican government earlier in May decided to include the manufacture of transportation equipment in the list of core activities allowed during a nationwide quarantine. Resumption of work has already been reported by the Mexican units of GM, Nissan and Toyota. The decision to start production is made based on the results of the inspection of sanitary safety measures at enterprises of the Mexican Social Security Institute IMSS.

According to the latest information from the country's Ministry of Health, Mexico is in fourth place in America in terms of the number of people infected with the new coronavirus after the United States, Brazil and Canada, with 71 105 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 7 633 dead.
