European Parliament elects Roberta Metsola as new President

In the first round of voting on Tuesday, members of the newly formed European Parliament (EP) chose Maltese Roberta Metsola, a candidate from the center-right European People's Party, to be the EP's President.

Metsola had already participated in election to the position in the preceding EP.

Her opponent in the race to lead the parliament was Spanish left-wing MP Irene Montero.

Metsola, holds a degree in law, was born in 1979. She was elected to the previous European Parliament in 2019 after serving as an EP MP from 2013 to 2014. Following the passing of her predecessor, the Italian David Sassoli, whose first deputy she was, the Maltese politician was chosen to lead the EP for the first time in January 2022.

Metsola won the first of four rounds of voting in the ongoing secret ballot.
