According to The Wall Street Journal, Tyson Foods is facing a lawsuit for greenwashing, being the second major meat producer to do so this year. Similar accusations were brought against Brazil's JBS in the U.S. in February.
Since 2021, Tyson Foods has had the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050, and around two years ago, it started promoting a strategy to generate "climate neutral beef." The Environmental Working Group claims in its legal case that these declarations are deceiving and the company lacks a genuine strategy to accomplish its stated objectives.
Earthjustice attorney Carrie Apfel represents the eco-organization in the lawsuit, stating that greenwashing deceives consumers who wish to support good causes and make climate-friendly purchases. When consumers are bombarded with false or misleading information, they cannot make informed decisions on where to spend their money, she said.
