The accord was finalized following a discussion between European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and King Abdullah bin Hussein of Jordan. The European Commission stated that the agreement will receive €3 billion in financial backing.

“The collaboration will enhance security, stability, and economic prospects for Jordan and the EU, directly benefiting our people. I am prepared to utilize all the resources available to me to transform today’s commitments into action,” remarked Dubravka Šuica, European Commission member for Mediterranean Affairs, regarding the signing.

The Commission referred to the kingdom as an essential contributor to peace and stability in the Middle East. The partnership established today seeks to build on the longstanding collaboration between the EU and Jordan to address shared challenges, according to the Commission. According to the Commission, it demonstrates the EU's readiness to assist the kingdom in handling the Syrian crisis and aid refugees and host communities in Jordan, while also creating further opportunities for investment.
