EU cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 7% in 2023

Producers across nearly all sectors of the EU economy lowered greenhouse gas emissions from 2013 to 2023.

In 2023, emissions from household and economic activities reached 3.4 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2), reflecting a 7% decrease from 2022 and an 18% reduction compared to 2013.

Data from the European Commission's website indicates that the most significant decreases in emissions over a decade occurred in mining (-25%, 18 million tons of CO2 equivalent), services (-20%, 54 million tons), and manufacturing (-17%, 142 million tons).

Emissions of greenhouse gases from households fell by 110 million tons of CO2, a reduction of 14%. Simultaneously, the transportation industry experienced a growth of 14% over the decade.

The level of greenhouse gas emissions (the amount emitted per unit of gross value added in the economy in euros) dropped by 32% from 2013 to 2023. Simultaneously, the added value of the European Union rose by 19%. Estonia (-61%), Ireland (-50%), and Slovenia (-41%) exhibited the most significant reduction in emission intensity.
