“Through today’s proposal, we aim to expedite the implementation of essential provisions by providing member states with extra resources to enhance the processing of asylum applications,” stated EC executive vice-president Henna Virkkunen.

The agreement is set to take effect in June 2026.

Magnus Brunner, an EC member responsible for home affairs and migration, stated, "There remains just over a year until the migration and asylum pact is fully implemented, but we should expedite our actions wherever possible."

For instance, the European Commission has suggested establishing a 'preliminary list of secure countries of origin' where Brussels determines that asylum seekers can be sent back safely to their home nations without the risk of retaliation.

The EC suggested establishing a preliminary EU list comprising Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco, and Tunisia.

The EU Council and the European Parliament must now reach an agreement on the proposal through negotiations.
