"We are prepared for discussions with the United States. Certainly, we have provided zero tariffs on industrial products, as we have accomplished with numerous other trade partners," said von der Leyen.

The proposal was presented well in advance (before Washington instituted 20 percent tariffs) and on numerous occasions. "It also concerned vehicles," Ursula von der Leyen informed journalists (as reported by AFP).

As stated by European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič, the 20% tariffs enforced by the United States impact €380 billion in exports from the European Union, representing 70% of all goods supplied to the United States. The EU plans to roll out the initial set of countermeasures on April 15. The inventory of items will be authorized on April 9. On May 15, the bloc plans to implement extra measures if discussions with the United States do not succeed.
