The number of anti-Semitic occurrences in Europe in recent days has reached "extraordinary" proportions, reminiscent of "the darkest times in history," reads a statement issued by the European Commission, which condemned these "abhorrent acts" in the "strongest possible terms."
According to the Commission, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a synagogue in Germany, a Jewish cemetery in Austria was desecrated, Jewish shops and a synagogue were attacked in Spain, and Stars of David were painted on Jewish residences in France. It observes that anti-Semitic acts and discourse are on the rise in the EU and around the world.
"They (the incidents) go against everything that Europe stands for. They are contrary to our core values and way of life," the European Commission stated.
"We must fight back against the rise of anti-Semitism, just as we have seen in the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in recent weeks; they have no place in Europe," the authority said in a statement.
