New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is alarmed by the spread of inflammatory syndrome among children, which is thought to be associated with the novel coronavirus.
He said this on Sunday, May 10, noting that the disease was found in 38 children in New York, in 9 cases the diagnosis has not yet been confirmed. According to the mayor, the sick children have an excessive immune response leading to damage to internal organs.
State Governor Andrew Cuomo also made a statement about the syndrome. According to him, the state is investigating 85 cases of this syndrome. Three children could die from its effects in the state, the youngest of whom was five years old.
Symptoms of the inflammatory syndrome are similar to Kawasaki disease (inflammatory lesion of the arteries) and toxic infectious shock. Some of the children have already been tested for coronavirus, 47 percent of them were infected, and 81 percent of the children had antibodies. The appearance of the syndrome in children is also reported in the UK, France and other European countries.
