Cyber Monday sets sales record in the US

11/28/2018

The last Cyber Monday set a new sales record in the USA - $ 7.9 billion, which is 19.3% more than a year earlier. Experts hope that, despite a slight decline in customer activity in regular stores, a significant increase in online sales will lead to the fact that the entire sales season of 2018 will be more successful than last year.

According to Adobe Analytics, online sales on the so-called Cyber Monday in the United States amounted to $ 7.9 billion this year, up 19.3% from a year earlier. In contrast to Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day, which have lost a part of sales in recent years, Cyber Monday is considered a day of sales via the Internet. This term originated several years ago, when marketers noticed that people began to actively buy gifts over the Internet without leaving the office on the first working Monday after Thanksgiving.

Adobe Analytics estimates sales on Cyber Monday based on data from 80 of the top 100 American retailers, including ordinary ones like Wal-Mart and online stores (Amazon and others). Speaking about how exactly people are buying this year, experts point out continuation of the trend seen on Black Friday, that is, a sharp increase shopping from smartphones.

On the past Cyber Monday, people bought goods for $ 2.2 billion via mobile phones, which is 55% more than a year earlier.
“Sales on Cyber Monday became the largest in history,” said Adobe Analytics marketing research head, John Copeland.

In such a situation, those stores that could offer the most convenient way of buying through smartphones turn out to be the winners. Amazon said that the past Cyber Monday was the most successful day for the company in the history of the company. Although Amazon does not yet provide accurate sales figures for the day, it said that over the entire five-day sales weekend since Thanksgiving, users purchased more than 180 million items. Echo Dot smart speakers, AncestryDNA genetic tests, Bose noise-canceling headphones for Apple devices, Michelle Obama’s book “Formation”, board game “Jenga” and Instant Pod cooker became the leaders of sales.

Now, experts expect that the entire season of holiday sales in the US will be successful, despite the fact that against the background of a sharp increase in online sales, preliminary results recorded a relative decline in consumer activity in ordinary, physical stores. “The main conclusion is that both customers and stores will have a successful sales season this year,” Craig Johnson, head of the consulting group at Growth Partners, said in an interview with Fox. “Looking to the future, the main question is whether this rate will be maintained and after the New Year".
