Chipotle tests robots for peeling avocados and making salads

Chipotle Mexican Grill is experimenting with two collaborative robots, "cobots" in its California eateries.

Mike Mozart
The Autocado cobot, created in partnership with Vebu, peels, slices, and pits avocados before pureeing them by hand to create guacamole. The average processing time for a single avocado is 26 seconds. Chipotle intends to incorporate approximately 129.5 million pounds (equivalent to 58,500 tons) of avocados into their dishes this year.

Augmented Makeline, another collaborative development with Hyphen, is a cobot that automates the assembly of bowls and salads, representing approximately 65% of Chipotle's online orders.

Chipotle has invested into Vebu and Hyphen via its $100 million venture capital fund. The exact amount of the investment was not disclosed.

Chipotle branches are found in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and France, with a focus on serving burritos and tacos.
