The Ministry of Commerce of China stated that the decision was made in order to safeguard the rights and interests of industry representatives.

On July 5, the European Commission placed temporary extra tariffs on Chinese electric cars being brought into the European Union. The regulatory body found that electric vehicle value chains in China receive unjust subsidies. The European Commission stated that this represents a risk of economic harm to electric vehicle producers in Europe.

The Ministry of Commerce of the PRC lodged a complaint with the WTO, stating that the EC's conclusions are unfounded both factually and legally.

According to a spokesperson from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the decision flagrantly breaches WTO regulations and weakens international collaboration in the fight against climate change.

The duties can last for up to four months. In this timeframe, a conclusive choice needs to be reached through a vote from EU member states. If that occurs, the duties will be enforced for a period of five years.
