There is no need to keep Canada in the North American Free Trade Agreement, said U.S. President Donald Trump and asked the US Congress not to interfere into the trade negotiations for the Nafta rejig deal, else he would be forced to completely cancel the trilateral trade agreement.
“There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out,” Trump said on Twitter.
“Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off,” he added.
Trump wants to sign a bilateral trade deal, with Mexico – which has already been agreed to with the Mexico, he told the Congress. This was informed by the US president after the trade negotiations with Canada – which also had a number of contentious issues, ended last week without any form of agreement on the revamping of the Nafta traded deal. The bilateral agreement with Mexico was announced by Trump last Monday.
According to some of the members of the Congress as cited by in some news reports, it is unlikely that a single bilateral deal with Mexico would be approved by the Congress without the presence of Canada in the deal. The US lawmakers are of the view that to pass a completely bilateral deal would require the participation and Support from the Democrats.
Following the inconclusive talks with Canada last week, a treat was issued by Trump where he said that import tariffs would be slapped by the US on Canadian-made cars if Canada refuses to join the negotiations for the revamping of the Nafta trade agreement. That threat has been severely criticized repeatedly by a large number of people. Last Saturday, Trump had again criticized the Nafta deal in his Twitter posts where he claimed the deal to be the reason for loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs and business.
