The Bank of Japan formally said earlier this month that the production of banknotes worth 10,000, 5,000, and 1,000 yen had ended. The new currency is expected to enter circulation in the first six months of the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on April 1, 2024.

The "founder of Japanese capitalism," Eiichi Shibusawa, a Japanese statesman and businessman, will be depicted on the next 10,000 yen bill.

The face of Umeko Tsuda, a teacher during the Meiji era who fought for equal rights for women in education, may be seen on the five thousand yen bill. Shibasaburo Kitasato, regarded as the "father of modern Japanese medicine," was one of the discoverers of the plague infection and will be depicted on the one thousand yen bill.

The three three-dimensional holograms on each of the new banknotes, which will be employed for the first time in the printing of banknotes worldwide, will move in response to changes in the banknote's position, marking the first time in history that this technology has been utilized to manufacture currency.
