The Australian federal court fined the local branch of American computer giant Dell $6.5 million for selling displays at an unreasonable premium, said the state commission on protecting competition and consumer rights (ACCC).

Dell Australia will pay A$10 million (about $6.5 million), according to a statement from the regulatory body, "for publishing false and misleading advertisements for discounts on computer monitors on its website."

The commission noted that consumers frequently spent more than they would have if they had bought the monitor separately and that the real benefit of purchasing over-hyped offers was frequently none at all. The regulator claimed that "more than 5,300 monitors were sold at an unreasonable increased price."

The court also mandated that Dell Australia notify each impacted customer and extend a refund.
