The agreement was signed on Monday, February 11, in Canberra by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Australian Minister of Defense Christopher Pyne and French Minister of Defense Florence Parly.
When choosing a new submarine, Australia considered proposals of the Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy and the German ThyssenKrupp, but in the end the decision was made (in April 2016) in favor of the French project Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS). In 2015, the company presented the conceptual image of the new underwater boats Shortfin Barracuda Block 1A - diesel-electric version of the new French nuclear submarine class Barracuda.
In Australia, the new type of diesel-electric submarines will be called Attack. The construction of submarines under the contract is planned for the not yet built shipyard in Adelaide.
According to current plans, the first of a series of new Australian submarines under the French project will be built "in the early 2030s", sea trials are scheduled for early 2031. The last of this series of 12 diesel-electric submarines is expected to be built in the early 2040s.
For Australia, the deal with the Naval Group in the amount of 50 billion Australian dollars has become the largest defense contract in the history of the country.
